Basque Tourism Observatory

Good practice Published on: 30/03/2012

Brief Summary:
Basque Tourism Observatory has been conceived as an integrated system of information, study, research and monitoring of tourism in order to provide institutions with the ability to foresee and react upon environmental changes, increase the probability of success when implementing strategies, identify opportunities and change the corporative culture. It is a tool that expands the information about data regarding the Gross Domestic Product; jobs generated by the tourism industry; average expense of tourists; qualification and training levels; and innovation in the tourism sector in Euskadi.

Project management: age of project, how it was funded, and how it was managed:
The creation of Basque Tourism Observatory has been possible because of the active collaboration of the Basque Government, Basquetour and CICtourGUNE. Similarly, its establishment has been feasible thanks to the provision of some structural funds of the regional research programs of the Basque Country.

Aims, Objectives and Purpose
Basque Tourism Observatory holds and integrates the legacy of information management generated by the technical and scientific community, complementing the existing framework with an innovative and highly valued proposal, with the following motivations.
• To unify dispersed information sources.
• To offer disaggregated information by different detail levels.
• To generate more information for the tracking and evaluation of the competitiveness and innovation of the tourism industry.
• To become information more accessible and interpretable.
