Analysis of accessibility of cultural routes

In the past the routes interconnected historical and native sub-regions (Abov, Gemer, Spiš and Zemplín sub-region) of nowadays Košice Self-Governing Region with Europe by means of trade and culture.

Brief Summary:
Košice Self-Governing Region as a strategic partner of the City of Košice in the project Košice–European Capital of Culture 2013 has developed Programme TERRA INCOGNITA (hereinafter "TI") as integral part of the main project Košice INTERFACE 2013. TI Programme is focused on sustainable cultural tourism development at three cultural and historical routes–Gothic, Wine and Iron Route. In the past the routes interconnected historical and native sub-regions (Abov, Gemer, Spiš and Zemplín sub-region) of nowadays Košice Self-Governing Region with Europe by means of trade and culture.

Project management: age of project, how it was funded, and how it was managed:
In 2010 Agency for the Support of Regional Development Košice as partner of the project „VIA REGIA PLUS–Sustainable Mobility and Regional Cooperation along the PanEuropean Transport Corridor III“ in consideration of the implementation of TI Programme and in close cooperation with the Department of Culture and Tourism of Košice Self-Govering Region (hereinafter “KSGR”) has initialized the development of the Analysis of accessibility of cultural routes in the territory of Košice self-Governing Region.

Aims, Objectives and Purpose
There was no large-scale survey realized for tourism purposes in the territory of the region. Project enabled to realize such survey. The aim of survey was to describe in detail existing situation in selected destinations along particular routes and thereby create suitable conditions for effective implementation of TI Programe:
• Enhancement of cultural background, awareness and enjoyment
• Stakeholders capacities building and quality enhancement of provided services
• Improvement of cultural, sport and free-time infrastructure

Outcomes: trends, findings
This reaserch the first time proposes system of complex evaluation of target destination for the tourism point of view in Košice region. Also it includes the proposals of categorisation and certification of target destinations, proposal of creation the network of certified target destinations and the proposal of system sustainability.

How it has been used: application, policy influence,..
Data of existing situation collected in survey were used for the evaluation of particular cultural routes and target destinations in Košice Region. The evaluation results ought to mention on fields in which it is necessary to support the activities of municipalities and other organisations in order to tourism development. Košice Self-Governing Region allready created the budget grants system in consideration of cultural routes development.

Learning: experience, benefits, challenges/problems
All evaluation criteria were applied at all predefined target destinations. There were made an individual evaluation for each data categories. First of all there was the general evaluation of each target destination. Based on its results the evaluation process of primary cultural objects has been done as well as evaluations of secondary facilities and attractions and at last the evaluation of tourism supra-structure. The evaluation process was done independently by two evaluators who filled in the evaluation tables and also in grafs.

Monitoring: how was data collected, success measured
The survey was done by the experts who are fully skilled and have enough information about the territory of the region. Potential target destinations were involved in the survey based on preliminary selection (base on the existing of primary cultural object in accordance with the theme of particular route) and large discussion with the associations acting at particular routes and concerned municipalities. Than existing situation analysis from primary and secondary resources followed. Collected data of particular destinations were thereafter evaluated using predetermined criteria.
